ELECTRONICS AND DOMESTIC APPLIANCES

ELECTRONICS AND DOMESTIC APPLIANCES

If there were a cash-for-clunkers program for fridges and washing machines, that would be perfect. Buying a new fridge is no longer a problem; on the other hand, what you should do with the old one, a giant weighing at least 70 kilos, can be a mind-wrecking question. The easiest solution is to place an order on the SIGUREC MOBILE site, our system for collecting waste electrical and electronic equipment directly from your home.

How are they recycled?

Different types of processes exist, depending on the type of equipment. Large appliances – fridges, freezers – are manually dismantled, then the fluids are collected (the freon and the compressor oil, which are stored in special tanks and sent to specialty recyclers), and then the machines are shredded to pieces like any other waste product. The metal parts are separated with the help of magnets and then the pieces of polyurethane foam are chemically separated. Non-ferrous metals – that are by definition not affected by magnetic fields – are separated from the rest by various procedures: centrifugal separation, putting all the pieces in some liquid (plastics and wood float, while metals sink at the bottom; with the iron already extracted, only non-ferrous metals remain), with the help of eddy currents, etc.

What are the advantages of recycling?

Of course, next to the obvious reasons – getting rid of old and voluminous appliances – recycling electrical and electronic equipment has many advantages: valuable materials are recovered (especially from computers), while others that are harmful to the environment are either neutralized or recovered.

This is the case of freon, a gas that acts as a cooling agent in fridges and air conditioning units. Freon is known for its harmful effects on the ozone layer that protects us from UV rays (that can trigger skin cancer). Fridges and air conditioning units made before 2010 were using a particularly harmful type of freon; the one found in newer units is much less dangerous. With SIGUREC you can be sure that the freon from older equipment will be safely stored and delivered to specialized recycling companies.

On the other hand, in the case of computers their recycling means the recovery of scarce natural resources like copper, lead, gold, silver, palladium, tin, etc.

What can I recycle?

Air conditioning units, fridges, washing machines, microwave ovens, electric radiators, small home appliances (blenders, mixers, coffee makers, vacuum cleaners, flatirons, etc.).

Will I receive a bonus?

Yes, definitely! This type of waste has a relatively high intrinsic value in comparison to other types of waste. The value of the shopping voucher you can use in SIGUREC partner stores depends on the type of waste and its weight; thus, the value per kilogram of waste in the case of a fridge is higher than in the case of a microwave oven. The underlying reasons pertain to the complexity and costs of recycling operations, as well as to the value of the materials that can be recovered.
