EcoPaper: We save forests

With its long and venerable history of over 150 years, EcoPaper is currently one of the cleanest paper recycling plants from Romania that makes corrugated cardboard exclusively by recycling paper and cardboard. The factory was founded in 1852 by merchants from Brasov, among which the scholar George Baritiu, one of the luminaries of the 1848 generation of Transylvanian intellectuals.

Operating without interruption for a century and a half, the factory in Zarnesti has been producing corrugated cardboard since 1980. It was one of the first industrial companies privatized in 1990, and starting in 2001, went through a process of refurbishment that meant closing inefficient and polluting production lines. Today, EcoPaper has a production capacity twice as high as in the 1980s, of about 80,000 tons of cardboard per year
.

Because paper manufacturing uses large amounts of water, we always make sure that we protect the environment by investing in the wastewater treatment plant, in the refurbishment of the water treatment plant, by continuous monitoring of emissions and water discharges, as well as test drilling for groundwater quality control.

What do we do with waste?

Unlike high grade paper, like office paper, that cannot be recycled more than 5-7 times before it irreversibly degrades, carboard is much more readily recycled. The recycling process consists in turning waste paper and cardboard into a paste by submerging them into a solution of warm water and solvents, and filtering it to eliminate impurities; the paste is then spread on a plane strainer, is dehydrated, then dried by passing it between heated drums. In the end, the resulting cardboard is rolled into large rolls that are cut to the sizes ordered by customers.

What is the product of recycling?

Corrugated cardboard. Cardboard is a very important resource, because it lends itself very well to repeated recycling; considering that it is widely used in packaging and therefore it accounts for a significant part of paper use, its conservation is an additional chance to having a clean environment.
